I hope you had a good break, everyone. The Amnesty is now over, and it's back to business as usual!

Challenge 16: 60 Minutes

This fortnight's prompt is something I've always wanted to have a go at: writing a story within a time limit, in this case sixty minutes. Bang it out as fast as you can! It's the ultimate flashfic.

But assuming that doesn't appeal to you, there's also the option of writing about sixty minutes. Is there a sixty minute alien invasion? Is it the countdown on the bomb or the length of the timeloop? Or perhaps how long Jack has to wait for his morning coffee... or some stopwatch antics?

Maybe you want to spin it another way, by remixing Gone in Sixty Seconds (it takes longer to hijack spaceships :) or Nick of Time, or having Torchwood go public and appearing on 60 Minutes.

Think outside the box and as timey-wimey as you please!

The clock is now officially ticking -- the 60 Minutes challenge will close in two weeks, on Sunday 24th January.

You can stop making New Year's resolutions now -- the vows challenge is closed.

Challenge 15: Amnesty

It's that time of year, when things are crazy and we look back at all our half-finished projects and despair. So rather than a new challenge this fortnight, you are welcome to finish off stories for any of the challenges we've run this year. Look at the tags to jog your memory.

The Amnesty will close in two weeks, on Sunday 10th January.

Happy New Year!

You can shake off that shiver going down your spine now -- the Omens challenge is over.

Challenge 14: Vows

Okay, I'm woman enough to admit it. I kind of want wedding fic. I have all these burning questions I want answered: What happened in the lead up to Gwen and Rhys's wedding, and was there any Torchwood excitement on their honeymoon? What exactly happened in that timeloop Jack and John were stuck in (and how many times did they say, "I do"?). And how did Ianto pop the question to Jack and Martha? ;)

But maybe you don't share my yen for wedding stories. Maybe you want to write about vows of vengeance -- Owen after one too many decaf coffees perhaps -- or oaths of allegiance -- what exactly did Tosh agree to when Jack rescued her from UNIT? There are so many possibilities; interpret the prompt as you will!

The Vows challenge will close in two weeks, on Sunday 20th December.

Class is out, and the School challenge is done. Sadly, the schoolyard was deserted this fortnight, and no one had a go on the swings.

You can't find any stories by clicking the challenge:school tag. :(

Challenge 13: Omens

Wow! We're up to the thirteenth challenge already, and although we've zoomed past Halloween, there's always room for a few more ominous stories, filled with portents, signs and other omens of good or ill. Am I right, or am I right?

Maybe you want to explore exactly what kind of psi training Torchwood One gave its operatives, and exactly how Ianto knows so much about everything. Or maybe Tosh's latest gadget has got more functions than meets the eye -- the third eye, that is. What about Gwen and her family's history with the Sight? Does Gwen have a touch of it herself, or does her child? Then there's Owen, who would be extremely pissed off the day he started channelling messages from the other side. Or perhaps Jack has another encounter with the fairies.

The possibilities are spine-tingling, so get out your scrying pools and crystal balls and start predicting the dire or desirous futures -- or pasts, or multiverses -- awaiting the team.

The Omens challenge will close in two weeks, on Sunday 7th December.

Time to finish up the filing and tidy the Archives, people. The Documents challenge is now signed, sealed and delivered. Thanks to those who played.

You can find the stories by clicking the challenge:documents tag.

Challenge 12: School

I hardly feel the need to sell this challenge to you, as school AUs are a staple of fandom, after all. But there is so much more scope to a School Challenge than the good old high school cliche!

Maybe the team go on a training exercise with U.N.I.T., or vice versa. Perhaps Jack and Ianto embark on an intense sexual course of discovery (Mmmm, yes please). Maybe Tosh moonlights as a science tutor in her rare time off, or Gwen is taking a cooking class so she can surprise Rhys with a romantic dinner. Or maybe Owen is a secret Rugby Coach on the weekends... What? Stranger things could happen on the Rift!

So put your thinking caps on and ponder all the possible variations on learning, education and classrooms.

The School challenge will close in two weeks, on Sunday 22nd November.

Time to unpack your suitcases and do the laundry, everyone. The Journeys challenge is now officially closed. Thanks to those who played.

Challenge 11: Documents

First an apology for the unexpected hiatus! The mods had such a smashing time on our Whoniverse adventure that it's taken a bit of time to come down from the heady heights and resume our day-to-day lives. But we're back now, and ready to get stuck into flashing you fortnightly. With new challenges, that is. :)

This fortnight, we're going with 'Documents,' which you can interpret any way you please. There are so many possibilities: emails between the team, official correspondence from the Crown, bank balances and the Torchwood accounts, or perhaps that delightful favourite -- cross-time letters between Jack and Ianto, a la The Lake House. *happy sigh*

Or perhaps you'll explore the wrinkles of Jack's Time Agency contract, or the ins and outs of the Shadow Proclamation, or some of the oddities in the Archives. Or maybe the TARDIS operating manual falls through the Rift, and the race is on to limit the damage to the timestream if it falls into the wrong hands.

Have at it, people. Any document, any time, any topic! Let your imaginations and photoshopping skills run free!

The Documents challenge will close in two weeks, on Sunday 8th November.

Time for all the walking dead to return to their graves -- the Resurrection challenge is now terminated. Thanks to those who played.

You can find the stories by clicking the challenge:resurrection tag.

Challenge 9: Domesticity

I think we can all agree that some days the only thing that really satisfies is a story about our favourite characters doing ordinary things, like cooking, or fighting over whose turn it is to do laundry (and who left the one red sock in with the whites!), or doing dodgy home improvements, or accidentally moving in together. In fact, the mods could read accidentally-moving-in-together stories all day long... not that that's a hint or anything. :)

This fortnight we're indulging our desire for the domestic. Anything goes, from curtin fic to shower sex to battles for the remote control. Or maybe you want to look at dysfunctional homes: what Jack's daily routine is like at the Hub, or a day in the life of Owen's death, or what happens out at Flat Holm. Maybe you want to explore the domestic through Rhys's eyes -- is he really a good cook, or does he have secret household ninja skills of some kind? Or maybe you want to answer the age old question: where exactly does Ianto Jones live??

Interpret the prompt as you will!

As usual, you have two weeks to get the team's household chores completed -- the domesticity challenge will close Sunday 20th September.

Hopefully we've all crossed the items off our lists, because the Five Things challenge is now closed. Thanks to those who played.

You can find the stories by clicking the challenge:5 things tag.

Challenge 8: Resurrection

Resurrection is a theme that's--ahem--clawed its way out of the crypt since Children of Earth, but the concept of resurrection goes beyond mere fixit. Zombies and vampires rise from the dead in your classic horror stories, and whoniverse canon already loops and winds back time to bring people back from the dead. Not to mention the properties of certain alien gauntlets.

Whether you have them smelling like saintly roses or partially decomposed corpses, the decimated team and their wealth of deus ex machinas leave open a whole raft of afterlife possibilities.

You have two weeks to bring the team back from the grave -- the challenge will close Sunday 6th September.

The Harlequin challenge is now closed. Quite possibly we were all still smarting from Children of Earth, so hopefully this fortnight's challenge is a bit more broadly stimulating. Thanks, though, to all those who played.

Challenge 7: Five Things

If you've spent any time reading fanfiction in any fandom, you've probably come across the "Five Things" story model. When it first sprouted it generally presented in the form of five snapshots of alternate universes ("Five Things That Never Happened To [Character Name]" being the most common title of such stories, doing exactly what it says on the tin), but over the years its characteristics have broadened. These days, a "Five Things" story is simply a set of multiple scenes -- generally not with the same chronological timeline -- that have a connecting theme.

The Five Things model can be one of the most fun to play with, letting you explore ideas and get your hands (very briefly) dirty without becoming mired in a larger plot.

There are the AU scenarios -- the obvious "Five things that never happened to..." that can span from forks in paths: what if Andy instead of Gwen had witnessed the resurrection gauntlet scene that first time? What if Jack had stood firm on his refusal to hire Ianto?

Or you might want to go more extreme with a set of entirely alternate universes. For example, "Five teams Torchwood Three never was" -- crewing a tourist ferry, ping pong champions, a gang of highwaymen/women...

If the AU route isn't for you, you might explore a theme within the canon framework: "Five artefacts Ianto catalogued," "Five autopsies Owen conducted," "Five cases Gwen solved," "Five times Jack went against his instincts."

The best thing about Five Things is that it's perfect for flashfic -- your ideas can be quick and spontaneous. Scenes don't need to be long, plot is rarely required. You've got two weeks to play around -- the challenge will close Sunday 23rd August.

Okay, okay, I know it's tough but it's time to let go of our secret pasts, weddings, wingfics and other guilty pleasures. The idfic challenge is finito. Thank you to all those who played.

Challenge 5: Season Three

We can't think about anything else but new canon right now, and we figure most of you will feel exactly the same way. So we've decided to embrace our fannish squee in this challenge. Basically anything inspired by Season Three is fair game! That includes the promotional photos, the trailers, the radio plays, and of course, Children of Earth.

Additional Rule

For the duration of this challenge, you must give spoiler warnings for season three content, and you must cut tag any content which contains spoilers (including titles which are quotes and so forth).

Play nice, please.

Cool Season Three Stuff:

ETA: You have two three weeks to get your Jones on for Season Three! This challenge will close Sunday 19th July 26th July. (Extended to allow American viewers to take part. Thanks to [personal profile] holdingoff for pointing this out.)
