That's it! Time to smash the ESP pendants, turn off the subetheric resonator and stuff the Pride bunting back in the drawer. We're all done with the Spectrum Challenge. Thank you to all those who played.

You can find the stories by clicking the challenge:spectrum tag. New challenge coming right up.

Challenge 4: Idfic

The definition of idfic is a slippery thing; it's all about pressing our buttons and channeling our dreams. Sometimes it's not even connected to a particular 'theme' or plot device, but just the way a story is able to tap into the reader's hindbrain and make all their secret fantasies come true!

As seasoned readers, we reckon there are a handful of buttons the Torchwood fandom seems to like to push in particular, and we've had a go at listing them below. In other fandoms, you might interpret some of these as 'crack' prompts or cliches, but in Torchwood I think we're all in agreement that just about anything goes. We potentially have all of time and space to play with after all, thanks to the Rift, the TARDIS and Jack's wriststrap.

And remember, idfic does not have to equal badfic. Cliches are cliches for a reason -- there's something about them that speaks to us and makes us yearn.

Our list of possible idfic prompts should give you at least one thing to sink your teeth into, but what you do with it beyond that is up to you -- whether you write a clever cliche parody, an utterly serious and compelling idfic, or bring something new to the table by turning the trope on its head.

  • secret past

  • unexpected separation

  • genderswap / bodily transformation / de-ageing

  • curtainfic / domesticity

  • vampires, werewolves & angels, oh my!

  • accidentally in love / marriage of convenience

  • pon farr / aliens made them do it / sex pollen

  • eternity / immortality / best friends forever

  • romantic misunderstandings / clueless

  • proposal / marriage / weddingfic

  • kidfic / 'preg

  • unrequited love

  • gossip / overheard

  • heartfelt declarations

  • public displays of affection / caught in the act

  • trapped in an inescapable situation (desert island, cave, prison, etc)

Got any more? Leave a comment and we'll add them.

You have two weeks to exorcise all your idfic longings -- this challenge will close Sunday 5th July. So get writing!

Please drop by and give us more prompt suggestions for future challenges. You can comment over on the prompt post.

*turns the thermostat back to standard room temperature*

Okay, folks, it's time to put away the bikinis and electric blankets. The Hot and Cold Challenge is officially well done. Thank you to all those who played.

You can find all the stories by clicking the challenge:hot & cold tag. New challenge coming right up.

Challenge 3: The Spectrum Challenge

Several prompters named colours or sounds or senses beyond the ken of mere humans, so we've rolled them all into one big rainbow and now proudly present The Spectrum Challenge.

For this challenge, we invite you to stretch your imaginations along the whole spectrum of possibility: any colour, sound or frequency (or lack of it), including invisibility and sounds only non-humans can detect.

Perhaps you want to take this opportunity to write that gay pride story, in which Ianto is out and proud and rather rainbow bedecked; or less political and more sartorial -- what's behind his choice of tie? Maybe your focus on colours is more metaphorical and the team are feeling blue, or green, or seeing red. Maybe it's the opposite of metaphorical and you construct an AU where they're all painters or musicians or crystal singers (you know you want to!).

Perhaps Tosh has been playing with gadgets again. Has she finally found the limits of what she can get from the CCTVs? What does the Rift monitoring program actually measure? Does Mainframe have a secret sensor network? Is that "measuring tape" that's lying around the Hub in actual fact sonic (why leave it at screwdrivers and lipstick)? Just what is the sub-etheric resonator for, and why must one refrain from sniffing it?

Or you could decide to go down the route of the sixth sense -- things humans can't normally perceive or measure. How do you measure someone's telepathic ability, anyway? Maybe Tosh or Owen end up haunting the Hub, and can only be seen through their etheric vibrations. Speaking of the (un)dead, what does it feel like for Owen and Suzie, tied to the alien emanations of the gloves? And why leave it at zombies when you've got aliens; perhaps Weevils start fomenting revolution in some kind of code through the cell walls, and maybe the vibrations are one of Andy's spooky-dos.

The combinations are endless! So, get out your palettes and start mixing -- you have until Sunday 21st June to post in response to this challenge!

Also, thanks to everyone who has left a prompt suggestion so far -- they have been very inspiring. Please drop by and give us more prompt suggestions for future challenges. You can comment over on the prompt post. Otherwise, we're starting to think Harlequin and Badfic challenges sound like fun! You have been warned. :)

That's it for the Undercover Challenge! All the secrets are out, all the sheets are washed, and all the underwear is safely back in the drawer. Thank you to all those who played.

You can find all the stories by clicking the challenge:undercover tag.

Challenge 2: Hot & Cold

A few prompters, who are probably presently in the northern hemisphere, suggested themes like "warm", "heat" and "torrid" as a challenge. To broaden the field a bit, we're proudly putting forth the "hot and cold" challenge!

You're more than welcome, of course to write about the weather. A particularly chilly Cardiff winter, or perhaps the TARDIS dragging the earth back a tiny bit closer to the sun.

But why stop there? Maybe Gwen is left to interrogate an alien that communicates through fluctuations of body temperature. Or perhaps Ianto pulls a weapon out of the archive that alters the target's core temperature (and Jack proceeds to make endless innuendoes about cold showers and/or setting fire to his loins).

Maybe it's not Cardiff with the wild extremes of climate--we know the team went to the Himalayas; what happens if they go on an international mission to central Australia? Or another planet entirely with a climate that's even more extreme?

Or, of course, the temperature fluctuation could be physical--maybe Tosh comes down with swine flu a virus that leaves her feverish. Or the curry place slips with the chilli and effectively ruins date night.

And lets not forget the metaphorical. Perhaps Jack's 51st century pheremones spin out of control and send him into heat, leaving him to--reluctantly--beat people off with a stick.

Or you might want to address the challenge at a more elemental level and have Owen "accidentally" set fire to the Hub. Resulting in the defrosting of all cryogenics inhabitants.

So, consider the fuse officially lit--you have until Sunday 7th June to post in response to this challenge!

Please help us get inspired for the next challenge by telling us what you want to read and write. You can comment over on the prompt post. Otherwise, we'll just start making stuff up, and that is bound to get ugly!

To kick things off, we're combining the suggestions made by [personal profile] sandalstrap and [personal profile] halftime1030 who both want to delve beneath the surface of Torchwood 3. Undercover is the theme! Think secret or mistaken identities, think infiltration missions, think bizarre alien underwear, think spies and James Bond and Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Maybe Ianto has to go undercover in an alien harem. Or perhaps Tosh is actually a spy for Torchwood 4. What exactly does Owen do with that pair of chaps that Jack found in the bottom of the medicine cabinet? How does Martha juggle all the different strands of her life? Maybe she still hasn't come out to Tom about her past with the Doctor and Jack. Speaking of aliens, what kind of mission was Jack on when he first met John Hart... and what secret signals do Time Agents use to identify each other anyway? And what about Jack's name? What's the real story about Jack picking 'Jack Harkness'? What other names has he used? Has anyone ever stolen one of his names?

Or maybe you're a fandom classicist, and you decide it's time Jack and Ianto go undercover at a gay bar.

The possibilities are endless!

You've got until Saturday 23rd of May to spill all of Torchwood's undercover secrets. *sets timer* Ready... set... write!

Thanks to everyone who left prompts for the first challenge. If you have a prompt idea for the next challenge, please drop a comment on the prompt post.
